A porcelain crown is a common dental treatment used to restore damaged or decayed teeth. It involves placing a custom-made cap over the affected tooth to protect it and improve its appearance. While this procedure is routine for many dentists, it may be unfamiliar and even intimidating for patients who are encouraged to get a dental crown. Our team at West Suburban Oral Health Care in Naperville, Illinois, can educate patients on these restorations and answer any questions about the procedure.
Our quality crowns are made from various materials such as metal alloys (gold, silver), porcelain, ceramic, resin, or a combination of materials. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, but typically, patients will choose our porcelain or ceramic options as they look just like natural teeth.
Your dental team at West Suburban Oral Health Care might suggest a dental crown if you have a tooth that is severely damaged, decayed, or fractured. A crown can also be used to cover and protect a natural tooth after a root canal or hold a dental bridge in place. Our dental team evaluates your specific case and determines if a quality dental crown is the best treatment option for you. Other options may also be considered depending on the situation that brings you to our dental office for further care and attention.
The first step in getting a porcelain crown is an initial consultation with your dentist at our office. During this appointment, our team examines your affected tooth and takes impressions to create a custom-made crown. The impression is mailed to a lab, where your permanent crown will be created.
Once the permanent crown is ready, you return to our office for the placement appointment. Our team will ensure a comfortable and precise fit of your crown and make any necessary adjustments before permanently bonding it to your natural tooth structure.
There are several benefits to getting a dental crown. First, it can protect and strengthen a damaged or weakened tooth, preventing further decay or breakage. Second, crowns improve the appearance of teeth by covering discoloration, gaps, or misshapen teeth. Third, they provide additional support for dental bridges and can restore proper functionality for chewing and speaking.
