Is there a difference between a crown and a bridge?

A crown is a cap for a single tooth. You might need one after having a root canal, if you have a broken tooth, or if you have severe decay and a “filling” won’t work. A crown restores functional esthetics and protects the underlying tooth structure so that you can keep your natural tooth.

It may be recommended to have a bridge if you have a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. A bridge would use the teeth on either side of the space to connect multiple crowns that look like multiple crowns but is one unit.

There are still many similarities in crowns and bridges. They are both cemented in place ,so they are not removable. They are fabricated in similar materials; all ceramics or sometimes people would like it in metal. While establishing esthetics using state of the art materials, they must also be cared for because the teeth anchoring the crowns and bridges can still become decayed, fractured or infected.

The team at West Suburban Oral Health Care will instruct you on how to care for the teeth involved as well as the surrounding bone and tissues.

What are the benefits of dental crowns and bridges?

Dental crowns and bridges are designed to help you maintain the natural integrity of your bite and smile.

Bridges help prevent shifting due to the spaces, which decreases your risk of developing changes in your bite, restores esthetics and facilitates mastication or efficient chewing of food.

Crowns and bridges when used to re-establish function and esthetics serve many potential functions such as,

  • restore missing tooth structure
  • alleviate pain from cracked teeth
  • protect teeth that have root canal therapy
  • enhance the ability to chew food properly, and provide stable chewing surfaces
